Hot Growth in Cold Chain

From food to medicine to Mother’s Day flowers, cold chain logistics drives a significant fraction of the global economy. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on temperature-controlled shipping every year and, according to one study, the market still has room to grow.

The global cold-chain market is predicted to grow to $271 billion (USD) over the next five years. This is a 7% increase from current levels.

According to MarketsandMarkets who conducted the study, “The growth of this market can be attributed to the growth of international trade of perishable foods, technological advancements in refrigerated storage & transport, government support for infrastructure development of the cold chain industry and increase of consumer demand for perishable foods.”

In simpler terms: Amazon food shipments and meal delivery services like Blue Apron and HelloFresh are so popular that they are impacting long-term industry expectations. In addition, dairy products, and their need for a consistent temperature-controlled environment away from sunlight, make up the largest market share of the cold chain economy.

For every shipment of temperature-controlled product that arrives at your door or a grocery store shelf, several stages of cold chain logistics come into play. You have the manufacturer facility refrigerator, trucks/ships/planes to transport it to a distribution warehouse, then more trucks to get it to the final destination where it may stay in storage on-site as well either in a cooler or another unit. So consumer changes with cold-chain products can quickly add up in the marketplace.

At Ernest Packaging Solutions we know firsthand how to make cold chain work, no matter the challenge. We even designed our own proprietary system, TempEndure, which is the only fully integrated custom packaging solution guaranteed to control the temperature of your product across the shipping cycle.
