eCommerce Packaging that Drives Social Sharing (and Sales)

August 13, 2015

Let’s be honest … the only time you like checking your mail these days is when you’re waiting for a package to arrive from Amazon or some other eCommerce site. Try and think back to the last time you actually noticed the box that the arrived with your order. What did you do with it?

If it was just a plain, boring box with nothing special going on, you probably threw it in the recycling bin. And thus ends the purchase, right? Commerce has commenced, and it’s time for you to move on and, for the people who sold it to you, to hunt for a new customer.

“Your boxes communicate with your client more than customer service reps, sales people or truck drivers,” says Greg Feinberg, President of Aisle 9 Group. “What is it saying about you when you aren’t there? Take advantage of the opportunity that is already there and ready to use.”

At Ernest Packaging Solutions, we don’t believe that delivery is the end of a package’s journey. In fact, it can be the start of something new, and it all comes down to social sharing.

According to Dotcom Distribution Packaging Report 2015, 38 percent of people have shared a photo or video of a new product they received in the mail. Additionally, 60 percent of people said that they would be more likely to share a photo or video if it was delivered in something that looked more like a gift—not a plain brown box.

Think about that for a second: Sixty percent of your online customers are willing to spread the word about your product to the people they know if you make them feel special when opening it.

A Simple Equation of Trust and Value

This matters to you because people trust their friends recommendations about a product more than they trust you. When a customer shares a good (or bad!) interaction with you on social media, the people who see it are more likely to believe them. So a happy customer shares happy thoughts about you.

A Simple Equation of Trust and Value

We have a saying here at Ernest, if all you want is a box, then you can go buy a box anywhere. But if you want the right package for the right product, well, then you’re better off connecting with solutions-focused professionals (ehem, that’s us).
