It’s a Paper Bag! It’s a Backpack! It’s PaperJohn!

Paper-John-Backpack

When you think innovative, new concepts in the world of paper products, you might think of our Cardboard Chaos series where we make a snowboard, surfboard, and even a guitar. Paper bags are probably the last things that come to mind. But German company OGATA UG took the basic paper bag concept and turned it on its head when they designed the PaperJohn.

In Germany and many other countries in Europe and Asia, bikes are the transportation method of choice. They’re cheaper to operate than cars and much better for the environment. A visit to Portland or Denver will show you that U.S. cities are starting to catch on to the appeal of bikes, too.

Nothing says, “Europe” like bikes as far as the eye can see.

But what happens when you want to pop out to the corner store for some needed items? Unless you’re sporting a giant basket on the front of your bike (not exactly the most fashionable look), you’re going to be dangling your bag awkwardly off your hands.

That’s the problem OGATA UG set out to solve. They came up with the concept of a standard block-bottomed paper bag, but with an important addition—long, flat handles that wrap entirely around the bag. These handles form straps, which can be used to wear the paper bag like a backpack. Much more comfortable to carry, and much more convenient for hands-free bike travel.

This is the exact kind of innovation we strive for at Ernest—where you take something every day and make it into something special. Take our SteelBoard® corrugated product, which took corrugated cardboard and made it outperform industry standards. Or our TempEndure® systems that take the best insulation projects and design them to create perfect temperature-controlled packaging solutions.
