Cardboard Chaos Invades Your TV on ‘Shock and Awesome’

Chaos, as in Ernest’s Cardboard Chaos, is spreading, and we couldn’t be happier. Our paper surfboard made in collaboration with Signal Snowboards took to the little screen on an episode of “Outrageous Acts of Science” this weekend. The Discovery Science Channel show says they are “pushing the boundaries of science to places it’s never been before.” Science, engineering, design? We’re so in.

The episode is called “Shock and Awesome” and you can view it right here:

We loved being in this show because it highlights how much work and design expertise goes into creating these one-of-a-kind cardboard creations. Sometimes the heart of the cardboard chaos matter—how challenging it is to get the design right—gets lost in all the fun and excitement of a cardboard guitar, surfboard, skateboard or snowboard.

Sure, we may make it look (kind of) easy. But make no mistake, extensive thought and testing goes into how the end designs will look, feel and perform.

“We accomplished this by cutting a dado into the honeycomb the exact width as the stringer. That gave us just enough contact of paper to paper for the polyurethane to bond,” says Mike Martinez, our Director of Design solutions, from this behind-the-scenes Buzz blog on how the surfboard was made.

Now, many of you may not know what that means, but trust us when we say it is scientific smartstuff, and it makes the corrugated surfboard not sink in the surf. Plus, it gets Ernest Packaging Solutions on Discovery Science Channel, which is pretty awesome too.

“Seeing our team highlighted on a science show is a proof of a concept of what we set out to do years ago,” says Ernest Packaging President Tim Wilson. “We aimed to motivate people to think beyond the brown box. The work done with Signal along with our designers and engineers is another leap forward for Ernest. We’re honored that Discovery recognized our hard work. ”

Adding TV to our Cardboard Chaos accolades keeps us energized to do even more of these wacky but innovative projects.
