The intersection of packaging materials, technology and creative innovation is exactly where we like to call home. And we would officially like to welcome Lexus to the party as they have just created a 1:1 full-scale Lexus IS entirely out of corrugated cardboard.
Just how do you make a Lexus out of Cardboard?
Using the same CAD designs that go int0 the actual creation of the car, LaserCut WORKS along with Scales and Models were able to break the car down into slices that could be assembled piece by piece. Inside and out.
Oh yeah, the cardboard car actually drives too!
This was not some basic “drop off a big pile of any old of cardboard” creation though. The craftsmen used three different flutes and gradient textures to give a more nuanced appearance to the final product. Each piece was laser cut for precise fitting over the course of several weeks and then glued together from the tires to the rearview mirror.
This isn’t cardboard’s first foray into high-end luxury. Boutique clothing and accessory brand Hermes created a stunning cardboard window display in one of their stores recently as well.
We know a thing or two about making corrugated do the unthinkable. We kickstarted this Cardboard Chaos. Make a cardboard skateboard? No problem. Take to the waves on a cardboard surfboard? Cowabunga! Shred the slopes on a cardboard snowboard? Done and done!
So, Lexus has taken it up a notch—we’ll give them that. But wait until you see our next Cardboard Chaos innovation already in creation. It’s going to rock your world!
