We already knew we could do the impossible with cardboard. We’d proven it throughout our Cardboard Chaos series by building a surfboard, skateboard and even a Fender guitar. This time around, we had to outdo ourselves. Beat ourselves at our own game. So once again, we partnered with Signal to make the world’s first and only cardboard drum kit. It started in the Ernest design lab with Mike Martinez, our Director of Design Solutions. By meticulously crafting corrugated cylinders and coating them with epoxy, he succeeded in making something that could stand up to some serious punishment from the sticks. Next, it was off to Masters of Maple, a renowned custom drum maker in LA. The founder, Sy Hanif, set out to completely handmake a drumkit that was already completely handmade. But the real test, of course, was how they’d sound. And we didn’t want to call in a novice to try them out. Instead, we asked Eric Kretz from Stone Temple Pilots for his seal of approval. The result? Earplugs, high fives and a ringing endorsement from the legendary rocker.
