We live in an electronic world. Look around you and see how many things need to be plugged in or powered up. From lighting to smoke detectors to the device you’re using to read this right now, everything is electronic. All of these items have been packaged at some point to make its way to you.

Like most things packaging related, the electronics sector is seeing massive growth fueled in part by emerging markets and online shopping. A recent report from Technavio says the electronic goods packaging industry will be worth nearly $22 billion by 2021. That’s a lot of moolah.

One of Technavio’s lead analysts, Sharan Raj, summed up the economic rise of electronic packaging in the report’s press release:

“Online retailers of electronic goods use different types of corrugated boxes depending on the product to be shipped,” Raj said. “These boxes are made primarily to ensure the safety of the products transported in them. In addition, effective packaging is becoming one of the key business requirements in the e-commerce marketplace, thus fueling the growth of the market.”

Your packaging is your first chance to make an impression on a potential customer, and ensure them that the enclosed product is shiny and safe. What kind of message does it send when it arrives on someone’s doorstep looking like this?

Ouch. Your reputation is on the line from the very moment someone looks at your package. If they give you the benefit of the doubt and discover a damaged product inside, they may change the channel on your brand and never flip back. With electronic goods packaging deployment on the rise, it’s more important now than ever to implement packaging that solves these challenges.

The Three Leading Trends of Electronic Goods Packaging

According to Technavio’s study, there are three leading trends: lightweight packaging, premium packaging, and sustainable packaging.

Lightweight

Transporting and storing electronic goods can be costly. At Ernest, we’re never ones to sacrifice durability in the journey to making packaging lighter. In fact, our proprietary SteelBoard® packaging was designed from the ground up to handle the toughest situations.

Premium

Differentiating electronic brands at the point of sale by creating a “premium” packaging experience can save brands on the costs of marketing. Our custom retail design solutions cover everything from brand creation to packaging design.

Sustainable

Paper-based packaging remains the most sustainable mass packaging solution out there. Made from renewable resources and easily recyclable, paper in its many forms continues to dominate the packaging landscape. Sustainability is built into the fabric of every Ernest solution.
