Great things happen when you combine good things! Chili dogs. S’mores. That new movie with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. So we’re excited that KFC is testing a new product that puts three of our favorite things together: packaging, sustainability … and dessert!

Packaging waste is a serious problem, and food packaging is one of the major culprits. In an effort to help solve the issue, KFC is experimenting with edible coffee cups. They will be made from a special, water-like biscuit that is wrapped in sugar paper and lined with layer of heat-resistant chocolate. Made in partnership with Seattle’s Best Coffee, the so-called “Scoff-ee Cup” is being tested in their U.K. restaurants.

“We have been experimenting with edible packaging to see if it could be a feasible product to bring to market in limited quantities,” said Jocelyn Bynoe, brand manager for Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC.

We’ve written before about boundary-pushing edible packaging before, but this is the first large-scale attempt by a major restaurant chain.

As consumers continue to show their support for environmentally and socially minded companies, businesses like KFC are adapting in order to attract a new generation of customers.

We at Ernest continue to find new ways to reduce the environmental impact of packaging material. In the past year, we’ve created a 100% recyclable snowboard, surfboard and push bike. We’re also helping our customers find ways to reduce their packaging waste without putting their products at risk.
