Could a can of tuna light your fire? A scaly sea creature might not seem like an ideal source of light, but it can easily become more than meets the eye. Simply stab a hole into the can, use a piece of newspaper as a wick, and the oils will give you light for nearly two hours.
Here’s another easy one for easy light: Use a tube of chapstick for a candle and a tampon string for the wick. It won’t be a huge flame, but it could provide the extra degrees of heat to prevent hypothermia in a winter storm. The uber flammable fibers of a tampon could be the difference between a cold, dark and hungry night in the woods and a fireside camp.
What if you don’t have a match or lighter to ignite these flames in the midst of a catastrophe? You could scrounge up a battery and short circuit it with the foil packaging of Doublemint gum.
