Is Google’s Same-Day Delivery the Future of Shipping?

November 11, 2014

Last month Google announced that it’s expanding its same-day delivery service, which it had previously only been testing in LA and New York City. Just a few years ago, the idea of same-day mail delivery would have seemed like science fiction, but this just shows that we’re one step closer to Willy Wonka’s great dream of instantaneously sending chocolate bars over the airwaves.

Google is continuing toward its goal of world domination with Google Express, which delivers items from select retailers — including  Barnes and Noble, Costco, Whole Foods, Staples, REI and PetSmart– on the same day that they’re ordered. Chicago, Washington DC and Boston have been added to the list of cities with the service.

You can also place the order using Google Wallet on your Google Phone. You’ll be able to share your new items with your Google Family and your Google Dog in your Google House. OK, we made up that last part.

Consumer habits are changing, and we’re all expecting our online shopping experience to be better, easier and faster. Much like Willy Wonka’s Veruca Salt, customers want what they want, and they want it now. That’s actually not a bad thing.

If Google is right — and they often are — same-day delivery will soon be a common thing all over the world. It will likely result in a dramatic increase in the shipping of perishable items such as fresh groceries. Your company doesn’t need to be ready for it yet, but you will soon.

You need a packaging partner that is thinking about where packaging is headed and what the future holds. That’s what we’re thinking about every day at Ernest.
