Costco recently took a proactive approach to revamping the pallet solutions for their chain of wholesale stores. In an effort to standardize their receiving operations and to increase safety, Costco has said goodbye to the stringer board pallets and instead opted to use only block pallets.

The concern, and resulting change was for deterioration of the stringer’s parallel boards over time. If the integrity of the board was jeopardized, then the pallet could, at best, snap and damage the product. Worst case scenario,  it could injure a warehouse worker or customer.

Block pallets, with their parallel and perpendicular stringers, provide extra stability and security. In addition, Costco cited the four-way pallet-jack operations of the block pallets as an increase to efficiency because they wouldn’t have to rotate a pallet of product within the truck to allow their electric jacks to reach the 40” opening.

Costco took initiative in addressing a pain point in their logistics and security by addressing their pallet needs. Warehouses and warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club need pallet solutions that work for them and not the other way around.
