In Finland, expectant mothers are given a gift from the government: a cardboard box filled with diapers, clothing, bedding, bathing products, toys and a small mattress, according to the BBC. Many babies — regardless of the family’s socioeconomic background — will sleep on the small mattress within the four walls of the cardboard box.
Perhaps the best part of all is that many say the care packages — cardboard crib, included — may be a contributing factor to Finland having one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.
