Chill Out with These Amazing Ice Sculptures

December 29, 2015

You might not think that a package design company and ice sculpture enthusiasts have a lot in common. But we do! Both know the importance of skilled craftsmanship and pre-planning. Also we know how to handle two of their most dastardly foes: heat and time.

Plus, we both look pretty sweet in one of these hats.

Buffalo, New York recently hosted the Great Lakes International Ice Carving Competition, in which artists had 32 hours to shape one 3,000 lb block of ice (along with six additional 300 lb blocks) into something magical. Or a king crab the size of a car. That works, too.

Other artists created scenes from the Sistine Chapel, giant goldfish and other wonderful pieces. The winner was an intricate carving of a ship atop a giant wave. Pretty “cool” stuff (see what we did there?!).

The thing about ice carving is that unless these pieces are being stored at the North Pole, eventually they will all succumb to heat and time. But, for the time they are enjoyed, they are masterpieces. So, too, is cold chain packaging. It doesn’t have to last forever, but it must last the trip. Because when you’re shipping food, dairy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals or other heat-sensitive products, you know that mastering cold-chain logistics is a matter of necessity for your business.

Stressing about how to handle temperature-controlled shipping environments? Chill out, and let Ernest Packaging’s Innovation Lab design a cold chain package for you.
