Helping After the Hurricanes

As a family company, we know how important it is to take care of one another. When the going gets tough, we see the best in people as they rise to help those in need, and nowhere has that been more evident than in the wake of the recent natural disasters across the US. What started as a generous donation from our founder Mr. Wilson has grown into so much more; join us as we help feed America!

There are still thousands of Americans who need support following hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, as well as the wildfires across California. Mr. Wilson spearheaded efforts to donate 7,000 cases of food to Houston communities, where one of Ernest’s branches calls home. But Ernest employees have taken on his charitable mission and are making it personal.

We spoke to our Houston Division to hear first hand about their experience. Here’s James Lucas (our Jeremy Renner on the left) and Eddie Canales (Eric Bana plus beard on the right) recalling the response to the natural disaster.

“Even as the water was still rising, people that had their own homes flooded were out helping others,” recalls Lucas. As Ernest’s Client Coordinator Lead in Houston, he was proud to report that many fellow employees contributed to the hands-on relief efforts. “It makes me proud to be a Houstonian.”

The spirit of helping others runs strong at Ernest, so it should come as no surprise that we strive to be a leader in our communities. “It’s great that we come together during drastic times like this,” notes Canales, Houston’s General Manager. “That’s where I think the Wilson family and Ernest are great at leading by example.”

In the spirit of Mr. Wilson’s donation and the contributions of Ernest employees, we launched “Ernest Feeds America” to donate food to Houston, Miami and Puerto Rico. Throughout autumn, we collected disaster relief items at our branches nationwide and will distribute them thanks to collaborations with local food banks and Feeding America. “It says a lot about the company we work for,” says Canales.

There are still thousands of individuals without homes, power or food even months after these disasters have passed. The storms may be over, but we have a lot of work left to do to help return the people living in these areas to normalcy.

“The situation with people being displaced is going to go on for months,” stresses Lucas. “We need to continue those efforts and not forget about those that are still in need. These donations are going to help tremendously.”
